Trollwood Performing Arts School, located at Bluestem Center for the Arts, is a unique arts organization committed to providing high-quality arts education, exceptional community entertainment, and serves as a community event and exposition center. Trollwood serves as the managing arm for Bluestem Center for the Arts, a world-class facility headquartered in Moorhead, MN. The campus includes river views, grassy meadows, woods and wildlife, outdoor stages, a 2,500-seat amphitheater, and the beautiful Marcil Commons which serves as an educational center and rental space including warm, knotty pine rooms with beautiful park views.
Trollwood Performing Arts School’s youth programs are committed to providing high-quality performing arts education and exceptional community entertainment. Since 1978, thousands of young people have spent their summers learning, growing, and making friends at Trollwood. Trollwood offers nine annual arts education, youth leadership, and performance programs. The school deliberately incorporates the outdoors because it is our belief that a connection to the natural environment fosters creativity, self-discovery, and an understanding of a healthy way of being alive. With nature as a model, students gain a better appreciation of the value of diversity, adaptability, cooperation, and interdependence.

Theater Technician
Position Summary: Coordinate and facilitate the technical theater needs of FPS. The Theater Technician inspects audio and visual equipment, lighting systems for productions, and other technical processes. They ensure all the equipment is in proper working condition, identify and troubleshoot defects, and deliver high-quality project results.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Training students to use the theatrical equipment in a safe, educational, productive, and professional manner. This includes creating a district-wide plan for educational programming for student technicians. This plan shall be communicated with the Assistant Technical Theater Directors for district-wide implementation.
- Facility Management of all FPS theatrical venues including scheduling and staffing. This will include:
- Creating the annual district-wide drama events calendar to facilitate the efficient use and sharing of the facilities, equipment, and staff time throughout the district by all of the different FPS activities and events.
- Overseeing and maintaining the electronic calendar for these events & venues.
- Maintenance and upkeep of FPS theatrical equipment and spaces. This also includes creating and updating a district-wide long-range plan to keep the equipment updated and in working order. This includes overseeing the borrowing, loaning, and sharing of this equipment between schools, and to outside entities. These plans will include the FPS shared theater equipment as well.
- Provide design and technical duties for the theater productions in Fargo Public Schools. This includes:
- Production Design, including scenic design, lighting design, and sound design.
- Technical Direction, Electrician, and Audio Engineer duties.
- Assistance with Properties fabrication if necessary.
- Work with district personnel to update and maintain the FPS equipment inventory system as it pertains to theatrical equipment.
- Assign & oversee the Assistant Theater Technicians in performing of their duties and time. Meet regularly to keep schedules and communication flowing.
- Assist the Assistant Theater Technicians with events & productions if necessary and available.
- Participate in all mandatory training or training appropriate to the position as required by the district.
Secondary Duties & Responsibilities:
- Ensure the lecture systems are in a proper working order, to allow their use for music, lecture, and similar events.
- Manage the rentals of FPS theater spaces to outside entities. Organize and provide technical support for all rental events located in the district theaters.
- Oversee the lighting and sound elements of the annual all-staff meeting.
- Compliance with the following as instructed by the FPS Director of Maintenance and Operations:
- Compliance with applicable State and Federal Fire and safety codes.
- Compliance with applicable FCC regulations.
- Compliance with applicable ADA regulations.
- Be a technical theater resource for other venues on the campuses, and in all of FPS.
- All other duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervise students during the assembly and production of events in the theater and is directly responsible for their safety and wellbeing. Supervise the Assistant Theater Technicians, their duties and responsibilities.
Education and/or Experience:

Assistant Theater Technician

Scenic Run Crew: SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN – Trollwood Performing Arts School 2022
Working under the direction of the Deck Chief, assists with the day-to-day on-stage and back-stage technical operation of all scenic and props elements during day and evening rehearsals in early July. Assisting Deck Chief, ensure the systematic, efficient, and consistent operation of the onstage and backstage area throughout rehearsals and performances. Helps run the scenic and props elements of the show during all performances beginning July 14 through July 31. Serves on a strike crew to dismantle the show, completing end of season inventories, and storing away equipment and tools.
Contract: Full time/on-site, July 3-Aug 5; day and evening hours required.
Salary: $13 per hour (some overtime required)

Train students on the operation of necessary equipment to run the show. Supervise all rehearsals and performances of the production to ensure the highest possible quality of all audio elements. Organize and supervise the strike and storage of all audio elements of the Mainstage Musical. Responsible for shop safety, coordinating with other departments and budget management. Trollwood Performing Arts School, located at Bluestem Center for the Arts, is a unique arts organization committed to providing high quality arts education, exceptional community entertainment, and serves as a community events and exposition center.
Trollwood serves as the managing arm for Bluestem Center for the Arts, a world-class facility headquartered in Moorhead, MN. SOUND DESIGNER/DIRECTOR: TROLLWOOD PERFORMING ARTS SCHOOL 2022
Join professionals from across the nation at Trollwood Performing Arts School, a unique youth arts organization that produces a high quality Broadway-style musical production each summer attracting over 25,000 audience members in an outdoor amphitheater located at Bluestem Center for the Arts in Moorhead, MN. Seeking Sound Designer for SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN directed by Michael Walling, NYC based theatre director and Artistic Director for award winning Trollwood Performing Arts School. Must have degree in technical theatre or related field and minimum 3 years professional experience. Collaborating with the Mainstage Musical Director, plan the production audio needs for the Mainstage Musical. Provide materials illustrating show-specific preparation of the technical and creative audio elements. Create a production time analysis and calendar stating clear goals and deadlines to execute the sound system design. Supervises one professional staff member in addition to students, and volunteers during the production phase to ensure quality and on time completion of audio goals. Train students on the operation of necessary equipment to run the show. Supervise all rehearsals and performances of the production to ensure the highest possible quality of all audio elements. Organize and supervise the strike and storage of all audio elements of the Mainstage Musical. Responsible for shop safety, coordinating with other departments and budget management. This is an educational theatrical production, and the candidate must possess the ability to teach youth.
Contract: Full time/on-site start date: Flexible, Mid to late May through August 6. Trollwood is not affiliated with any unions.

Seeking Sound Technician for SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN directed by Michael Walling, NYC based regional theatre director and Artistic Director for award winning Trollwood Performing Arts School. Working with the Sound Designer/Director, establish a production plan and schedule for completion of the audio needs for the Mainstage Musical. Work with the student staff to accomplish production goals and deadlines, while creating a healthy learning environment. Under the direction of the Sound Designer/Director, assist in supervising show operations and run crew. Maintain continuity and quality of the production through to the end of the run. Finally assist with organizing and executing the strike of all audio elements of the Mainstage Musical. This is an educational theatrical production, and the candidate must possess the ability to teach youth.
Contract: On-site, full time with flexible start from Mid-May and contracts ending Early-August. Not affiliated with any unions.

ASM/DECK CHIEF: TROLLWOOD PERFORMING ARTS SCHOOL 2022
Join professionals from across the nation at Trollwood Performing Arts School, a unique youth arts organization producing a Broadway-style musical production each summer attracting over 25,000 patrons in an outdoor amphitheater at Bluestem Center for the Arts in Moorhead, MN. Seeking ASM/Deck Chief for SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN directed by Michael Walling, NYC based regional theatre director and artistic director for award winning Trollwood Performing Arts School. This position will be required to work with the Stage Manager to produce, maintain and distribute schedules, reports and other written materials communicating expectations and pertinent information to the cast, their guardians, production team, artistic team, and administration. The Deck Chief/ASM is the on-stage leader of the Stage Run Crew and works in conjunction and under the direction of the Stage Manager, to oversee the day-to-day on stage technical operation of all scenic elements and run crew personnel to ensure safety guidelines and processes are defined and followed “on deck” based on the standards of Trollwood Performing Arts School and Fargo Public Schools. Successful candidate will have a technical theatre degree with emphasis in Stage Management and a minimum 3 years professional experience in theatre management for musical theatre. Professional collaborative and educational environment.
