TOTALLY TROLLWOOD ACADEMY

THIS IS A PROGRAM DESIGNED FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS!

Morning or afternoon sessions teach young performing arts enthusiasts the basic skills of acting, musical theatre, vocal performance, and dance/movement. Each daily session includes a one hour class in three areas of study: acting, musical theatre, and dance. Participants are also eligible for beginning level Trollwood Academy elective classes opposite their selected Totally Trollwood Academy session. No auditions required.

Ages: 11–13 (as of August 31, 2019)

Dates: June 5 – June 27, 2019 | Monday–Friday

Orientation: Both morning and afternoon Totally Trollwood Academy students will meet June 5, 8:30-10:20am.  Classes begin after orientation.  Trollwood Performing Arts School at Bluestem. Attendance is required.

Time:
Morning Session, 8:30–11:50 am and optional afternoon electives from 1:00–4:10 pm.
Afternoon Session, 1:00–4:20 pm and optional morning electives from 8:50 am–12:00 pm.

Registration Deadline: Friday, May 17, 2019. NOTE: Registration remains open after this deadline. However, a $25 late fee will be assessed.

Bus Transportation: During the month of June, Trollwood will offer bus transportation to Trollwood Performing Arts School from various pickup points in Fargo, West Fargo, and Moorhead and back again. Routes will run prior to 8:20 am and again after 4:30 pm, allowing you to participate in a full day of programming at Trollwood.

For just $90.00, you may ride the bus both ways, only one way, or switch it up from day to day! Routes will operate from June 5 – June 27, 2019. Refer to Student Services or the registration form for schedule/locations.

TOTALLY TROLLWOOD SESSIONS CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING CORE CLASSES:

Stage One
Find your “inner actor” and gain confidence onstage. This class will include fun and creative acting games and an introduction to acting techniques.

Totally Broadway
Learn to sing like a Broadway star! Through this introductory course you will learn the basics of singing, how to act a song, and beginning movement and choreography — you’ll be on your way! Students will learn solos, duets and work as an ensemble, singing and dancing to Broadway’s best songs!

Dance Shake Down
A class designed to introduce young students to the basic principles of dance. Simple ballet vocabulary— including barre and center work—and across-the-floor modern and jazz sequences are used to explore the common themes of alignment, coordination, strength, flexibility, balance, energy and musicality present in all forms of dance. Will include a sampling of Jazz/Hip-Hop, Modern, and Ballet.

If you participated in last year’s program, we encourage you to continue your training by signing up again. Class content changes each year.

ADD TROLLWOOD ACADEMY ELECTIVES

Totally Trollwood Academy students are encouraged to add Trollwood Academy electives to heighten their summer arts experience! If you are a morning Totally Trollwood Academy student, you may choose from a selection of afternoon, beginning level Trollwood Academy classes. If you are an afternoon Totally Trollwood Academy student, you may choose from the morning, beginning level courses. Taught by professionals from around the nation, these classes offer opportunities to explore all areas of the arts. Add a couple classes and spend your day with us training at Trollwood!

MADI WILTS

Stage One & Totally Broadway Instructor

Madi is looking forward to her first summer working at Trollwood! She has recently graduated from Concordia College-Moorhead with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Vocal Music Education (K-12). Madi has trained and performed with Stages Theatre Company (Hopkins, MN), Children’s Theatre Company (Minneapolis, MN), and Chanhassen Dinner Theatres (Chanhassen, MN). She has workshopped new productions and spent 2 summers as an education intern with Stages Theatre Company. Most recently, Madi has performed in Concordia College’s mainstage production of Fiddler on the Roof, under the direction of Bill Russell, a Tony nominated writer. Madi can’t wait to sing, create, and imagine with this year’s Trollwood students!

MEG BARO

Dance Instructor

Megan Bero is the founder and director of Studio 170. She has been a dance educator for thirteen years. She has been on faculty with Dance Education Center in Stevens Point, WI, under the direction of Tori Rogoski, Trollwood Performing Arts School, Fargo, ND, and Youth Company Chicago, Chicago, IL, under the direction of Jerry Foust. Megan began training at the First Street Academy of Dance in Menominee, MI, under the direction of Susan Bunting. She continued training at the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point in modern, tap, jazz, ballet, and composition with Joan Karlen, Michael Estanich, Jeannie Hill, and Pamela Luedtke. She graduated from UWSP with a Bachelor of Arts, double majoring in arts management and dance. She has created and implemented dance curriculum for students ages three to adult. She choreographs for show choirs, dance teams, musicals, color guards, and special events.

HANNAH MAE SWANSON

Accompanist

Hannah Mae Swanson is passionate about connecting with people through music, which drew her to collaborative piano. Hannah has performed as a collaborative pianist at numerous conferences, competitions, and recitals in the Midwest. Hannah also has experience performing solo piano repertoire in the Fargo area and across Minnesota. Hannah has performed with several jazz combos and ensembles and currently plays with Grüvhaus, a jazz/funk sextet. Hannah graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance in May 2019 and will begin her Master’s in Collaborative Piano and Music Theory Pedagogy at NDSU in August 2019. Macy Johnson

Dance Instructor

Macy Johnson is from Chaska, MN and is currently an NDSU student studying Management Communications. She danced competitively with Metropolitan Dance Alliance for 15 years and has extensive training in all styles from ballet, lyrical, jazz, tap, hip hop, musical show, and more. As a young dancer, Macy was recognized for her powerful jazz style & technique, winning various scholarship rewards. Her passion for tap and hip hop also led her to receive numerous Judge’s choice awards throughout her competitive career. Growing up in the Twin Cities allowed Macy to be exposed to various Nationally recognized choreographers. She has studied with the best of the best in the dance industry and also had the privilege of teaching along side some of the industry leaders as an assistant for Fluid Dance Convention. Macy has a strong passion and desire to teach the new generation of up and coming dancers. Macy is creative, energetic, eager, and passionate of all things related in the dance world and cannot wait to share her passions at Trollwood this summer.

Dance Footwear: Proper footwear must be worn during dance class to ensure maximum safety and the highest quality of performance. If you already own both, please bring jazz shoes and ballet slippers to the dance portion of Totally Trollwood Academy. If not, one or the other will be fine. Sandals, flip flops and some types of tennis shoes are not adequate footwear for dance classes. In the event that financial barriers preclude the purchase of appropriate dance shoes, please contact Trollwood for assistance.

Beginning Acting
Prerequisite:
 None
Unlock your creativity and engage your imagination through theatre. Using games and scene work, learn how to create characters, use your voice, body and emotions as acting tools, and explore the dramatic text. Have fun and connect with peers while developing self-confidence.

Beginning Broadway Dance
Prerequisite:
 None
Beginning Broadway Dance introduces students to the world of musical theatre dance. Students learn and perform basic concepts of musical theatre choreography, audition prep skills, and standard dance technique. Great for those wanting to try something new!

Beginning Sketch Comedy
Prerequisite: None
If you enjoy classic comedy, witty satire, or just a good joke, sketch comedy would be great fun for you. Learn how to develop a formula for jokes and scene structure while collaborating with a team. Write and rehearse your ideas and watch your comedy come to life! We’ll cover the basics to get you started, help you develop your ideas, and teach you what you need to complete your sketch and have your audience rolling in the aisles!

Dance for Music Videos/Film
Prerequisite:

Movies and movement collide! Hone your dance skills while learning techniques for performing in music videos and on film. Work with the Intro to Filmmaking students to create movement specifically designed to be captured on camera.

Film Studies
Prerequisite:
 None
Love watching movies? Want to better understand what makes them so incredible? This class will screen and analyze clips from popular movies, breaking down storytelling secrets such as the importance of setting, how camera movement underlines a scene, how to disguise exposition, how costuming, lighting and even the actors’ blocking all help to establish a tone–and much, much more! From classics to contemporary films, we will explore every genre to find out why we all love going to the movies so much!

Hip-Hop Dance
Prerequisite:
 None
A class that focuses on the basics of hip-hop. The class guides students to find confidence in self-expression through contemporary hip-hop moves. The class teaches fundamental exercises to build groundedness and quick shifts of weight to use during dance sequences.

Improv Basics
Prerequisite:
 None
Students will learn the fundamentals of improvisation: how to accept and not block offers, how to work intuitively rather than intellectually, how to rely on storytelling rather than jokes, understand status work, and the basics of scene building—character, physicalization, careful listening, the importance of opposites, building trust, high stakes, environment, and creating a “beginning-middle-end.” Short and long form improvisation skills will be taught in a supportive and fun environment.

Intro to Filmmaking
Prerequisite:
 None
Learn the basics of how to operate camera equipment, set up shots and piece it all together using user-friendly computer editing software, all in a fun and positive environment. Walk away with your own 2-5 minute movie!  Quiet on the set, please, we’re ready to roll camera!

Musical Theatre Vocal Technique
Prerequisite:
 None
This class provides essential training for the young vocalist while singing songs from your favorite Broadway shows! You will learn all the basics of singing, such as proper breathing for singing, how to support the voice, proper diction and vowel formation, extending your range, and finding the ideal resonance. You will learn how to sing for an audience, including correct posture, interpretation, and how to work with an accompanist through the use of solos and group numbers. Daily sessions include physical and vocal warm-ups, group work on vocal techniques, and individual coaching on solo pieces.

Show Choir
Prerequisite: None
Come be a part of our show choir designed for middle school students and perform music from genres such as pop, rock and Broadway. Additionally, each song will feature choreography and staging. This is a great way to showcase your singing and dancing talents while working with others to create an ensemble performance for Sun Celebration.

Stage Makeup Basics
Prerequisite:
 None
Join us for this fun, hands-on class to learn about the basics of makeup design and how to apply stage makeup. Some of the creative projects will include how to apply corrective makeup, old–age makeup, fantasy makeup and more!
NOTE: It is required that each student has their own personal makeup kit. Returning students will be allowed to use their kits from last year. Complete kits will be available for purchase from Trollwood for $60. If financial barriers preclude the kit purchase, please contact Trollwood for assistance.

Tap Dance
Prerequisite:
 None
A class that focuses on the fundamentals of tap dancing. The course builds skills and confidence in basic tap steps, foot patterns and tap improvisation. For the more experienced tapper, the class will build upon the fundamentals, focusing on increased levels of difficulty and cleaner sound.

Technical Theatre Experience – Scenic
Prerequisite:
 None
Get hands on experience in one of the exciting areas that comprise the discipline of technical theatre:  Scenic! You can help create set pieces, etc. for the Mainstage Musical, Hello Dolly! As a performer, this course will give you the opportunity to better understand these elements of the theatre, and grasp the concept of teamwork as the backbone of any successful theatrical production. Class participants will receive training and guidance in this area from a skilled instructor.

Please bring sunblock and a water bottle! We have water fountains to use throughout the day, but we want to make sure all the students stay hydrated and healthy throughout the warm summer days.

TOTALLY TROLLWOOD ACADEMY (6-8)

Totally Trollwood Academy exposes middle school students to the performing arts in three curricular areas: Vocal Music, Drama, and Dance.  The applicable standards and benchmarks for this program are listed below.  Not all standards and benchmarks will be addressed in the four week session, but a significant number of them will be represented.

MUSIC

Standard 1: Singing
Students sing, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.

6-8.1.1. Sing accurately and with good breath control throughout their singing ranges, alone and in small and large groups.
6-8.1.2. Sing with expression and technical accuracy a varied repertoire of vocal literature.
6-8.1.3. Sing music representing diverse genres and cultures.
6-8.1.4. Sing music written in two and three parts.

Standard 2: Instrumental Performance
Students perform on instruments, alone and with others, a varied repertoire of music.

*This standard is not applicable in Totally Trollwood Acacemy.

Standard 3: Improvisation
Students improvise melodies, variations, and accompaniments.

6-8.3.1. Improvise simple harmonic accompaniments.
6-8.3.2. Improvise melodic embellishments and simple rhythmic variations on given pentatonic melodies in major keys.
6-8.3.3. Improvise short melodies, unaccompanied, over given rhythmic accompaniments.

Standard 4: Composition
Students compose and arrange music within specified guidelines.

*This standard is not applicable in Totally Trollwood Academy.

Standard 5: Reading Music
Students read and notate music.

6-8.5.1. Read complex rhythms in simple and compound meters.
6-8.5.2. Sight-read simple melodies in both the treble and bass clefs.
6-8.5.3. Know standard notation symbols.

Standard 6: Listening
Students listen to, analyze, and describe music.

6-8.6.1. Understand appropriate terminology to describe specific music events.
6-8.6.2. Know the uses of the elements of music in the analysis of compositions representing diverse genres and cultures.

Standard 7: Evaluating Music
Students evaluate music and music performances.

6-8.7.1. Know how to evaluate the quality and effectiveness of music and music performances.
6-8.7.2. Know how to apply specific criteria when offering constructive suggestions for improving the performance of self and others.

Standard 8: Music and Other Disciplines
Students understand the relationship between music, the other arts, and other disciplines.

Standard 9: Music, History, and Culture

DRAMA

Students comprehend a wide variety of dramatic literature.

6-8.1.3. Understand the construction elements of dialogue and actions.

Standard 2: Acting
Students will engage in fundamental acting skills.
